Who we are
We have initiated two libraries each run by a lady from the community who distribute books to children either from their own home, a public place and also by going door to door. Each lady covers 100 families reaching each family once in a week. I personally pay Rs. 3000 per month to each lady. We will keep increasing such libraries by finding individuals who pay salary to a lady librarian. In future we will do a book donation campaign locally in Powai (Mumbai). We also believe that these libraries will help build bridges between people living in Powai.
Our work and its impact
I am a professor at IIT Bombay in the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science department.
How we will utilise these books
I have been working with children for several years staring from when I was a faculty member at IIT Kharagpur to now when I am at IIT Bombay. I dream of libraries everywhere particularly for the underprivileged. The two libraries in Powai (Mumbai) mentioned here were started late last year. The idea is to get the citizens living in Powai involved in contributing to the benefit of less privileged within Powai. The approach to running these libraries have kept in mind the sustainability and it assumes individuals funding salary of each librarian and donation of one book a year from some of the families living in Powai. I also am interested in working on ways of addressing malnutrition and in that regard I along with a student and inspiration from many others have launched a free to download App (smart healthy baby) on playstore to help mothers. Also, for more details you may watch the TEDx I delieverd at IIM-A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TonwUMZi5DU) The funds will be utilized to provide part of the books to the two existing libraries and add another library (seed books) as I am in touch with another lady from the community who is enthusiastic to be a librarian (door to door). Once these three libraries are running smoothly we will start approaching the local community in Powai (Middle and Upper class) to "own" this campaign and contribute to running these libraries without needing any external support.
