Who we are
The aim of this program is to inculcate the reading habit in these children by providing access to books and regularly making them read. Thereby, we aim to improve their English language skills by raising their reading and comprehension capabilities. This will in turn ensure that they understand their text books and what they learn in other subjects as well. Overall, it would make their education itself worthwhile.
Our work and its impact
We are a group of volunteers who run a reading program in a school for under privileged children in Bangalore.
How we will utilise these books
We have set up a library from scratch in the school, with books collected through a book donation drive. We have also ensured active usage of the library by conducting regular weekly library sessions for the children. This program has introduced the idea of reading for pleasure to these children who otherwise have no access to books other than their school text books. In the long run, it will greatly enhance their language skills like reading always does. We are currently trying to build a collection of books that are written in simple language and have stories with an Indian context so that the children feel connected to what they read and are encouraged to read regularly. Books from Pratham publications answer this requirement perfectly. Hence this campaign.
