Who we are

Jeevan Rekha Parishad (JRP) is a Bhubaneswar based non-profit that provides non formal education for street/slum children and children engaged in child labour. Its goal is to mainstream these children and ensure that they complete schooling. It, has to date, enrolled over 500 children in its slum schools. It has through its Slum 2 School Initiative focused on speaking, reading and writing skills to reduce Early School Leaving (ESL) and eventually help them to enroll in Government schools across the city to ensure that they do not become school dropouts and lose their right to school education.

Our work and its impact

Jeevan Rekha Parishad through its Khusi Shishu, or happy childhood, programme to address the needs of children from 5 to 10 years old living in the slums of Bhubaneswar JRP's slum schools seek to provide a cozy, safe and positive environment where children could learn, express their creativity and have a serene personal growth despite the difficult economic conditions that their families are facing daily.

How we will utilise these books

JRP focuses on a number of activities including peace, solidarity, human rights and sustainable livelihood issues for disadvantaged communities in Odisha. Its educational activities focus on children living in Nilapadia and Adarsh slums in Bhubaneswar. The goal is to make kids gain self confidence and through tutoring help them to improve their educational level and to enroll them in governmental schools (or at least give them the skills that are required for finding a sustainable job). The subjects taught are Oriya, English, Mathematics, and Basic Computer skills. Children also engage in a number of extra curricular activities that focus on theatre, sports, dance, music and art. JRP will utilize the mobile kits in its slum schools and the books in Odia and English will be used to improve the listening (comprehension) and reading skills of children between the ages of 5 to 10 years. In addition, the opportunity to read books both in English and Odia, will enable better comprehension of words and their meanings in both languages and encourage the child to communicate effectively in both languages, which in turn will encourage lateral thinking and creativity among these children.
