Who we are

To establish a multi - lingual library at Pathankot (rural, current location) and also replicate such libraries across different states. These children have limited access to books, sports equipment and have no access to hobby or co curricular activities. We are currently in a small village (Nawan Pind) on NH1A where we engage with government school children (primary and middle school – till 7th standard) in play based educational programs. Reading is an important component of our activities and it is our endeavour to instil the joys of reading within our children, one book at a time.

Our work and its impact

The idea behind Atisa-Play, Learn, Grow took shape in December 2015 and having completed a year now is a vibrant, young organization. Current field location is in rural Pathankot in the village of Nawan Pind, with its head office in New Delhi. The Founder members were struck by the absence of exposure to books, reading material, games, sports equipment and other forms of creative expression such as arts and crafts among the under privileged section of the people in their native village. Provided the correct stimuli at an early age children’s energy can be channelized in a more positive direction. Currently operational in Pathankot district, Punjab with plans to start work in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan in the coming years with a library in each location.

How we will utilise these books

Atisa’ as the word imbibe is a Tibetan reference to the word ‘peace’ which when added with the playway method, helps children from disadvantaged communities overcome differences to create peaceful communities. We believe that by using ‘play’ children tend to learn more about themselves and their communities and become responsible for their own future. Everyone who walks in is encouraged to think, engage, express themselves and take some learning back home with them. Engagement of children is done three to four times a week, after school hours through activities such as reading, story telling, sports, arts and craft, dancing, singing, map reading, team building and problem solving games. We are happy to see the positive response to reading sessions, the curiosity that is generated among the children and also the fear of language is overcome all through the joys of reading. Children feel inspired, laugh, play, unleash their imagination, reach distant lands all while they read their books We hope to sustain and enhance this curiosity and interest by establishing a library in the village. This will help reach not just our 50 children but also any other child from the village who wishes to read a book or just sit and flip through it pages seeing illustrations. Also to further build the habit of reading we will like to start a book lending program, reading clubs once we have adequate books. Life we believe is a lifelong learning experience and books can help us truly grow and overcome our limitations
