Who we are
Samiksha Foundation - Caring for Children with Cancer Trust is a Creative Learning Initiative for children with cancer and their caregivers. Samiksha Foundation is one of the unique schools in the country, addressing the nonmedical needs of the children with cancer, the need of education, exercise, through yoga and meditation, recreation, play, creative activities and entertainment.
Our work and its impact
Samiksha Foundation, an exclusive children’s cancer patient support group that would take a different approach to children’s cancer and provide them non-medical support, was set up in 2007 at Bengaluru. Following a chance encounter with a family of a 6 year old battling cancer in 2006, Sandhya Sharad- the Founder, learnt that children with cancer cannot go to school during treatment for medical and psychological reasons. Families struggle even post treatment and tend to compromise on their Quality of Life; many stop sending their children to school, during and post cancer. SAMIKSHA Foundation, named after the little girl met in 2006, is a creative learning initiative that addresses specific concerns of children with cancer and their families, outside the realm of medical intervention and treatment.
How we will utilise these books
Samiksha Foundation is one of the unique schools in the country, having three main areas of action- Educational support, Spiritual support and Support through play and creative activities. Our vision is to enable children to go back to their study program in schools without losing a year, be with their peers, settle in with hope, confidence and relive childhood days. The work done through this Foundation is an attempt to increase the ‘Happiness Quotient’ of Children with cancer and that of their caregivers, We strongly believe that a difference can be made to both, the lives of the children as well as the caregivers. These activities help the children increase their self-esteem and confidence to face up to the challenges of their medical condition with hope, pride, dignity, and thus, improve their Quality of Life and of their families too. This would, in turn, help the children reintegrate into mainstream life post discharge. Samiksha Foundation will utilize the funds to setup a library in two new learning centres in Bengaluru, aiming to empower children through knowledge. Children from different socio-economic background, age groups and geographical locations, some also first generation learners, will benefit from access to these books available in the library.
