Who we are

I found that most rural children were not able to read properly even in their local language and needed to read books that were contextual and relevant to their settings. I feel that children could be initiated into reading if they begin to read in their local languages (Tamil) and with books that are visually and textually relevant in order to motivate them to read and develop an understanding of issues relevant to their neighborhoods and the areas they live in. I want to develop the reading and writing skills of young children in Government schools

Our work and its impact

I am a development consultant who works with rural marginalised women and their families in Tamil Nadu. I connect funders to local non profits in Tamil Nadu to empower rural women through livelihood initiatives. One of the NGOs that I work with runs an after school programme and teaches children conversational English. We wish to empower children by introducing them to the world of books and are particular that they begin young and read in the local language.

How we will utilise these books

My mission is to introduce rural children to the world of books and motivate them to read books in their local language (Tamil) that is contextual and relevant to their surroundings. We also are keen to introduce them to read books in English in the hope that through reading, their ability to converse in English (which is important in enhancing employment opportunities) will improve and be sustained. I plan to work with three NGOs in Tamil Nadu (all based in rural areas) to introduce rural libraries to disadvantaged children. Ready made kits from Pratham with books in Tamil and English along with story telling and other sessions will motivate children and give wing to their creativity. and wean them away from other activities such as watching television and cinema that limit their imagination and world view.
