Who we are
The #PBChamps (Pratham Books Champions) campaign, started in 2012, is an annual celebration that invites volunteers to conduct storytelling sessions across India. The idea is to encourage children to fall in love with reading. These sessions are conducted free of cost and mostly with children from under-served communities. We hope that these storytelling sessions will also bring to light the issues of joyful reading, access and multilingual publishing.
Our work and its impact
Pratham Books was set up as a not-for-profit children’s book publisher in 2004 with the mission to see ‘a book in every child's hand’. The key objective was to publish good quality, affordable storybooks in multiple Indian languages to support reading acquisition among children. In the last decade, Pratham Books has published over 350+ original titles in 21 Indian languages, which total up to about 3000+ books. Our vision is to reach 200 million children in India, and we hope to someday put 'a book in every child's hand'.
How we will utilise these books
At Pratham Books, we believe that every child has the right to enjoy good books. And we believe they should have stories set in surroundings familiar to them and in a language close to their culture. We believe that to make books accessible to every child, the price points have to be very low. Pratham Books is a brand of story books as Indian as the children who read them. As a not-for-profit publisher, our dream is to see a country where every child wants to read, is able to read, and has something good to read. From publishing good quality and highly contextualized stories to be read and enjoyed by children, we consistently reach out to children through our various partner organizations. In the last year, we distributed over 30+ million books to our young readers with the help of various organizations across the country. Our aim is to have something good for every child, in every part of the country, and in the process spread the joy of reading far and wide. The #PBChamps campaign has been growing every year we've grown from 250+ champions to 3000+ volunteers in the last 5 years. The funds collected this year will go towards giving books to individuals, schools and organizations who want to participate in this nation-wide campaign that celebrates the joy of stories, reading and languages.
