Who we are

“I read because books take me to a different world. They teach me to imagine the unimaginable.” And isn’t that true for all the book lovers of the world? But what about those who don’t have access to books? For whom books are a luxury! What do they read? I work with government schools in Bombay and seek your contribution to set up a library that can change the lives of 890 students.

Our work and its impact

My name is Sharanya Hariharan and I am a Gandhi Fellow who works for better administration in Government run schools in Mumbai. From the books I read as a child, like Aesop’s Fables, Amar Chitrakatha and Malgudi Days to the ones I read today, books have shaped the way I think, write and act. In the 4 government schools I work with, I want my students to enjoy this basic privilege of having a library of books that can change their world.

How we will utilise these books

In the schools that I work with, I engage with multiple stakeholders including students, teachers, parents and government officials. All my efforts are channelized towards making this learning space an experience that a child will remember forever. So far, my interventions have increased involvement of parents, student enrollment and have created a fear free environment. My next project is to ensure that these children have books to read that will improve their vocabulary, enhance their creativity and simply make them more well read and knowledgeable. Your donations will be utilized to set up one library in each of the 4 schools that will impact 890 students of varied ages. The library will function on a rotational basis such that each school will exchange their books with the other every quarter. Books in the local language, Marathi as well as different languages including English and Hindi will be made available to them. Having books to read is the most basic means to a happy childhood, which unfortunately these children do not have. Your contribution will go a long way in ensuring that our future is more informed, imaginative and cultured. “To build up a library is to create a life. It’s never just a random collection of books.” - Carlos María Domínguez
