Who we are
Having the choice of reading stories in your own language is freedom! Every child in India should have a book to read in a language she understands and loves. Celebrate the month of Independence with us as we democratize the joy of reading a good storybook, in one's own language! Help us make #FreedomtoRead a reality by helping us put together a pack of 150 books in Odia to be given out to children of Sikshasadan to own a book of his/her own!
Our work and its impact
Sikshasandhan work with about eight thousand tribal children in sixty elementary school in six tribal panchayat of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. These tribal panchayats are amongst the most underdeveloped and inaccessible panchyats of the districts, where more than 90% of the people are schedule tribe belonging to the 'Kolha' tribe, who speak 'Ho' language. The schools in these area lack basic infrastructure facilities and teachers’ absenteeism is a common problem. However the most important aspect of the issue faced by children is the problem of language. The official language of the state (Odia) is the medium of instruction in these schools, while the student completely lacks any knowledge of the State language. Therefore classroom communication is hampered and ultimately student drop out from the school due to communication issue. Of course there are other issues relating to tribal culture, tradition, livelihood issues, poverty, parental awareness on education etc.
How we will utilise these books
In this backdrop Sikshasandhan work at different level to enrich government schools in the realm of RTE Act with a mother tongue based primary education approach. As part of this approach educated youths from the community with matriculation/intermediate as the minimum qualification having interest in teaching and working with the community are selected to teach as language teacher in school, who teach up to class three in mother tongue(Ho). Gradually they shift to the mainstream Odia language through different methods and strategies including locally prepared TLMs. These teachers are also been exposed multi-grade and multilingual based training by Sikshasandhan where the thrust is to contextualize the classroom transaction/ pedagogy and bridge the gap between the home and school environment. Also the focus is to gradually expose the tribal children to the mainstream language and text while using the mother tongue based folklore's, songs, stories, riddles etc. These funds will be utilized for giving the joy of owning a book to children from Shikshasadan in Bhubneshwar. 150 Odia books will be given out through this donation campaign.
