Who we are
The 'Rocketeers' are a bunch of 54 fun loving, persistent, brave and curious eight year olds studying in a low income Government school in Chennai. They have just been exposed to books outside of their textbooks and boy do they love story reading! They are beginning level readers but love to flip through even those books that are above their level and make up their own stories based on the images. The one thing they keep talking about is starting a library for their classroom. The Rocketeers' motto is 'Rocket Our Growth' and we strongly believe books are the answer.
Our work and its impact
I am a primary school teacher at a government school in Chennai. I teach a bunch of 54 super curious third graders who just love books. I grew up reading Enid Blyton and books have built who I am today. My kids have persisted through so much in their short lives and still get to school everyday morning to learn new things. I would love to expose my kids to the world beyond their present horizon which is pretty limited and I feel books would help us get there.
How we will utilise these books
Our library will be accessible to the 180 odd second to fifth graders, who eagerly throng our school every day. Our community is a low income urban sector of Chennai and a proper school library would be a great exposure to the kids. Books help broaden the mind's horizon and it would be an amazing resource to teach my kids that there is a world outside of the confined spaces that they call home and community. The funds will be used to set up a library in our third grade classroom and would enable our library hour dream to come true. The books will be available to the kids to read at school or home.
