Who we are
We are a class of 47 eight year olds studying in a Government School in Chennai. The books are for setting up a library in the class. Our class is interested to start reading in English as much as we can and as soon as possible. We are emergent readers now and we will soon move up the ladder if given opportunity and access. The reading levels range from 0.0 to 2.0. Help us become better readers.
Our work and its impact
I am teacher at a Government School in Chennai. This fundraising is to start a library set up in the school I teach so that the children are exposed to a variety of books. Not only that, they would inculcate an interest in reading, which will help them in their speaking, listening and comprehension skills. These books are far beyond the reach of the children, if not for this campaign. Half of students go to bed without dinner, they get wet in their sleep during the monsoons and many more things. But such facts should not deprive them of their basic right to read and enjoy stories WHEN THEY CAN WITH YOUR HELP. I am just a facilitator between you and them and willing to do what ever it takes to make them better in their future.
How we will utilise these books
The impact does not limit itself to the class, but it will spread to the school for other primary classrooms. So, the impact is widened from a 70 children to 150 children. The news would spread and we can actually impact more number of young readers from the local community even if they are not from our school, but from the same low income community to where our class belongs to. I aim to set up a library in the class, where students can borrow to books to read and then later return it to the library and borrow more books. The key is to provide exposure and access to wide range of English Story Books.
