Who we are
We Merasi children of Jaisalmer carry forward an ancient Folk Music tradition in the vast Thar Desert of Rajasthan. Our Merasi School Library offers us our first opportunity to proudly look at and read storybooks. We want to add library books at a primary level and also send children attending our special youth gatherings home with a book to share in their villages.
Our work and its impact
US. based Folk Arts Rajasthan (FAR) and India based Lok Kala Sagar Sansthan (LKSS) are two NGOs sharing a dream of opportunity and equality for children trying to leave behind the stigma of illiteracy and prejudice that they experience each day.
How we will utilise these books
At LKSS simple educational programs run six days a week for twelve months of the year. They offer children community driven classes building reading, math, health, and life skills, while encouraging preservation of their unique musical legacy. With your generosity, empty new library book shelves will begin to fill with Pratham books. At the end of Merasi Youth Sammelan meetings, which celebrate the power of education and music preservation,a book will travel home with each child as a profound token symbolizing dignity and possibility. "No More Manganiyar (meaning beggar), We are Merasi ! (musician and story-keepers)"
