Who we are
Pratham was founded in 1995 in Mumbai and is an innovative organisation working to improve the quality of education in India. Focused on high-quality, low-cost, and replicable interventions, Pratham has developed a learning outcomes-based approach to enable children in India to read, write, and do basic math. The organisation works with both in-school and out of school children from varied age groups and our interventions provide a visible and dynamic demonstration of how impact can be achieved in a short period of time without a large number of resources. Pratham has been the recipient of numerous awards. In 2012, Pratham’s Co-Founder Dr. Madhav Chavan was awarded the WISE Prize for Education popularly known as the “Nobel Prize for Education” and recognised in 2018 by the Asia Society as an Asia Game Changer. In 2021, Pratham’s CEO – Dr. Rukmini Banerji – received the Yidan Prize for Education Development. Pratham has been awarded the Kravis Prize in Leadership (2010), the Skoll Award (2011), and the Lui Che Woo Prize in the Positive Energy Category (2018) and also named as one of the ‘Top 100 NGOs’ in the world by The Global Journal (2012).
Our work and its impact
Pratham has three key programming segments being implemented today: a) Early years - Holistic development of foundational skills involving caregivers, especially mothers, of children aged 3-8 years. Done in partnership with the government with the aim of institutionalising these practices. b) Elementary grades - Expanding the Read India programme, ensuring foundational language and math abilities apart from science interventions by working in villages and promoting community ownership over a period of 3-5 years. c) PraDigi remote learning - Leveraging technology and digital content for rural contexts by developing and providing digital learning tools to enable learning at an individual's pace. Pratham’s approach to teaching and learning has expanded and evolved through direct work and in partnership with government systems. While direct interventions have expanded with a focus on increasing and sustaining programme impact at the beneficiary and community level, partnerships have been pursued to create systemic impact. Through the Mohalla Library Initiative, Pratham aims to reach 10,000 children.
How we will utilise these books
When the world turned to digital resources during the Covid-19 pandemic, children from underprivileged backgrounds found it challenging to access age-appropriate storybooks. Pratham’s Mohalla Library Initiative aims to ensure that all children in a mohalla have access to age-appropriate books from diverse genres. The libraries constituted within this initiative include academic and non-academic activities for children. The library will be run by local volunteers, family members, youth within the community or other community members. These volunteers will spend one hour each day reading out stories, encouraging children to read and narrate stories, and organising art and craft activities. The initiative is designed to be conducted in and around public spaces such as streets, parks, temples, mosques, community halls, and other spaces such as within homes and on rooftops. Daan Utsav or, the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated every year in India from October 2nd to 8th. For Daan Utsav this year, we are aiming to raise funds to set up 500 libraries in Delhi’s mohallas and share the joy of reading with thousands of children.
