Who we are

The Government Middle School in Tharuk is an institution situated in the Changthang region of Ladakh, at an elevation of around 13,000 feet above sea level. The government school is unique in Ladakh, known for its solarised and environmentally friendly building structure.

It operates as a residential school, providing boarding facilities to over 150 students from the Lalok region. The school was upgraded to the status of a Government Model School in 2026.

Our work and its impact

Changthang is one of the most remote parts of Ladakh and is home to the pastoral Changpa community. The Government Middle School in Tharuk was established in 1956. However, the Changpa people rear livestock and move across vast valleys throughout the year. This nomadic way of life made it difficult for them to access several basic services.

To address the challenge of providing education to the children of these pastoral families, the Government Middle School in Tharuk was transformed into a centralised residential school. Completed in 2001, the construction of the residential school was a true community effort, every family from all the villages in the region contributed four weeks of voluntary labour.

How we will utilise these books

The teachers of the Government Middle School in Tharuk are on a mission to expand the school's library. Thanks to previous support from well-wishers and institutions, a functional library already exists. The goal now is to develop it into a comprehensive resource with books covering a wide diversity of topics for children across different age groups.

The expanded library will benefit children from across the region. Through regular engagement with books in a child-friendly and inviting space, the teachers hope to nurture a sense of wonder and curiosity among local children and encourage them to explore the joy of reading.
