Who we are

Deuka: Ek Jatra is a free community library located in a rural village in the Jorhat district of Assam. Founded through the initiative of Progyanika Saikia and Jimirani Duarah, it aims to revive the joy of reading and ensure that children from rural communities have access to books beyond their school textbooks. The vision is to nurture scientific temperament, curiosity, and informed citizenship among young readers.

The library serves as a safe and inclusive space for children and adolescents from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Many of the children are first-generation learners with limited access to reading materials at home. Beyond functioning as a mobile reading space, it operates as a community learning hub that encourages cultural exposure, confidence-building, and life skills development.

Using an age-appropriate, child-centred approach, the library conducts storytelling sessions, read-alouds, audio-visual learning activities, interactive games, and guided discussions. Through these engagements, it fosters critical thinking and creates an environment where every child feels valued, respected, and motivated to learn.

Our work and its impact

We facilitate regular reading sessions, storytelling circles, and interactive learning activities for children and adolescents. Our work goes beyond providing access to books; we use stories to spark meaningful conversations and strengthen social awareness.

Through age-appropriate discussions, we gently explore themes such as rigid social structures, fairness, equality, and constitutional values. Children begin to question stereotypes, understand their rights, and develop respect for diversity. In a time of increasing device dependency, we actively cultivate reading habits as a healthy alternative. By making books engaging and accessible, we help children reduce screen time while rediscovering focus, imagination, and reflective thinking.

We also respond to growing social isolation within families and peer groups. Communication gaps, limited dialogue among children, and reduced time spent in nature are becoming common. The library offers a shared physical space where children interact, collaborate, and build real-world social skills.

Importantly, the space fosters belonging. Children feel heard, express emotions safely, and practise empathy. Over time, they take ownership of the space by caring for books and contributing ideas, supporting long-term grassroots social development. A previous donation drive expanded our children’s collection and strengthened community engagement.

How we will utilise these books

The donated books will be used to expand our mobile library outreach to one additional village (Gharphalia, Jorhat) and to a nearby tea garden community (Sarucharai Tea Garden). This will allow us to reach children who do not have access to any library or reading space.

The books will be circulated through regular mobile library visits, used in read-aloud sessions and storytelling activities, and made available for borrowing. This expansion will help extend free access to quality reading material to children in geographically and economically underserved areas.
