Who we are
Let’s Build a Library is a community-driven initiative that began in 2021 during the COVID period, born out of a deep love for books and a vision to revive the reading culture among children. The first library under this initiative was established at Chaengdai Village in Tamenglong district of Manipur, creating a shared space for learning and imagination. Books were collected through online mobilisation and social media, with the collection being largely crowd-sourced by supporters and well-wishers. The library is now freely accessed by community members and students.
Building on this foundation, the project aims to expand further by establishing more libraries across Tamenglong District, ensuring that children and communities in remote and semi urban areas have continued access to books, knowledge, and the joy of reading.
Our work and its impact
We have set up a physical community library where people can come together to read and learn. The library currently holds a collection of a few hundred books that are freely accessible to students and community members. Through regular access to books, students have begun to develop a reading habit and experience the joy of borrowing and reading from a library. While the current collection has laid a strong foundation, there is a pressing need for more books for early readers and young learners to support foundational literacy.
In addition, we organise small literary activities for students that encourage creativity, curiosity, and engagement with books. Over time, the library has grown into an important community asset—supporting learning, nurturing a culture of reading, and providing a shared space that is valued by the community.
How we will utilise these books
Once the fundraiser is completed, all donated books will be properly catalogued and stocked in the library for regular access. In addition, we plan to build a portable library kiosk that will travel on a monthly basis to schools in and around Tamenglong District. This mobile library will allow children in nearby and remote areas to benefit from access to quality books.
Given that there is currently no properly functioning library in the district, this initiative will be of significant value. Through the library and the mobile kiosk, we hope to reach and positively impact hundreds—and eventually thousands—of children and community members through access to books and reading opportunities.
