Know more about us
Who we are
Sunnyside is a small K-12 Experiential School in Chennai rooted in nature-based, experiential education and strong value systems. We work with children from low income families, early years to high school, creating an environment where learning grows from curiosity, real-world engagement, and meaningful relationships.
At Sunnyside, the world around us is the first teacher. Children learn through projects, outdoor exploration, conversations, reading, building, observing, and reflecting. Academic foundations are built alongside life skills—communication, independence, responsibility, collaboration, and critical thinking—so learning feels connected, purposeful, and relevant.
Guided by Montessori principles, interdisciplinary projects, and an emphasis on character and ethics, Sunnyside supports children in becoming confident learners who can think deeply, act responsibly, and find their own paths in education and life.
Our work and its impact
We run the Sunnyside Reading Club and a learning space where reading is a big part of how children grow; not just for school, but for life. Every week, we do read-aloud sessions, have simple guided conversations, and do story-based activities. This helps children build better language and understanding, learn new words, ask questions, make connections, and share their thoughts. It also helps them grow empathy and values like kindness, fairness, and courage, and become more confident speakers and storytellers.
Our work supports society by raising children who can think for themselves, communicate well, and understand others. At a time when screens are replacing books for many children, we are also trying to bring back a culture of reading at home; families reading together and talking more. Over time, this builds a real love for stories and helps children grow into thoughtful, responsible young people.
How we will utilise these books
The books raised through this fundraiser will strengthen our children’s community library and be used in three simple ways.
-
Reading Club Saturdays: We’ll use them for weekly read-alouds , plus short discussions and activities that build understanding and thinking. Themes will include nature, relationships, courage, emotions, culture, and values.
-
Borrow-and-read at home: Children can borrow books to take home and read with family. This keeps reading regular, helps build a lasting habit, and supports families who don’t have easy access to good children’s books.
-
A school-wide reading culture: Books will also support quiet reading, buddy reading, literature circles, and project work. Stories will spark writing, art, nature observation, and values-based conversations; so the library is a shared, well-used resource for many age groups.
