Who we are
Kahani Ki Dukaan Foundation is a community library and expression arts centre for rural children, where they can explore their dreams, fears, and imaginations through storytelling, theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Our aim is to help them develop creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking. By interweaving stories with performance art tools, we engage children in important social and environmental issues such as girl child education, gender equality, menstruation, the climate crisis, gender identity, diversity, inclusivity, LGBTQ+ awareness, and more.
We are a grassroot organization that also works with women in rural areas to create sustainable livelihoods. Through our rural skill development programme, we focus on reviving traditional crafts and upskilling women to help them achieve financial independence. Our storytelling practices draw inspiration from folklores, folk songs, and original stories rooted in rural feminism and inclusivity.
Our work and its impact
Kahani Ki Dukaan facilitates a non-judgmental space for rural children to express themselves and learn various expressive arts in the process. Rural villages often lack post-school spaces that serve as community hubs encouraging creative thinking among children. Through our artist residency programme, we invite artists from different parts of the country to engage with children, providing them with exposure to diverse practices and bridging the gap between urban and rural contexts. Regular workshops conducted by our resident artists ensure continuity in their learning.
So far, through our collaborative approach, we have reached children in over 30 villages and distributed more than 5,000 books, helping create spaces of learning, joy, and inclusivity.
Currently, we are expanding our work to establish a new community library and art centre at Grace Academy School in Lungzik, Sikkim, and extending support to an established library, Deuka: Ek Jatra in Jorhat, Assam.
-
- Grace Academy School, located near Pelling, is a small primary school (Nursery to Grade 5) with 85 students and 6 teachers, serving children from the Sherpa and Limbu tribes. Together with the school founders, Lakpa Dawa Sherpa and Hangma Sherpa, we are building a library and expression arts centre that will serve both the school and children from neighbouring villages who currently lack access to such resources.
- Deuka: Ek Jatra is a grassroots, community-led initiative in Jorhat, Assam, founded by Progyanika Saikia and Jimirani Duarah. It began as a small Weekend Mobile Library in August 2024 and has now grown into a vibrant, inclusive community space. Kahani Ki Dukaan Foundation is extending its support to strengthen their existing library by bringing in more books and creative learning resources, ensuring children have continued access to reading, storytelling, and art-based activities throughout the year.
How we will utilise these books
The books received through this fundraiser will be used to create engaging and inclusive learning spaces that inspire curiosity, creativity, and expression among children. They will serve as the foundation for our new library in collaboration with Grace Academy School in Lungzik, Sikkim, and as additional reading resource for Deuka: Ek Jatra in Jorhat, Assam.
At both centres, the books will be used in daily reading sessions, and creative workshops where children explore stories through theatre, art, and music. They will be used to strengthen language learning in English, Hindi, and regional language.
The libraries will also act as shared community spaces promoting a culture of reading and collaboration beyond classrooms, making reading joyful and participatory all year round.
