Who we are

Surya Foundation is a national-level NGO committed to empowering children and youth in rural India through education, values, and skill development. For the past 29 years, we have been nurturing young minds by creating safe, supportive, and engaging spaces for learning.

Through 240+ Surya Sanskar Kendras across 10 states, we engage children in daily two-hour evening sessions that go beyond academics. These centres focus on holistic development—instilling good habits, encouraging creativity, nurturing talents, and shaping responsible citizens.

Our work has positively impacted over 2 lakh children across India, equipping them with the tools and confidence to overcome challenges and become active contributors to society.

Our work and its impact

We address the gap in access to quality educational resources in rural India by providing age-appropriate learning materials, nurturing reading habits, and fostering creativity. Our Surya Sanskar Kendras serve as transformative community learning spaces, especially in low-income rural areas.

One of our most impactful initiatives has been establishing Bal Pustakalay in villages of Haryana. In Talwandi Rukka, for instance, access to storybooks inspired Radhika, an 8-year-old aspiring teacher, and many children like her to explore new ideas and dream beyond their circumstances. These libraries have sparked creativity, improved literacy, and built confidence among hundreds of children. By cultivating a culture of reading, we not only enhance language and comprehension skills but also encourage imagination, empathy, and critical thinking—helping children build brighter and more informed futures.

How we will utilise these books

Through this fundraiser, we aim to procure Pratham Books’ Library-in-a-Classroom (portable library) sets to establish four Bal Pustakalay in the villages of Garhinegi, Baberkhera, Basai, and Jaspur in Kashipur tehsil, Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand.

In this region, over 80% of children study in government or low-fee schools, and only 1 in 4 rural schools have functional libraries, leaving most children with limited access to storybooks and creative reading materials. Establishing these libraries will enrich the existing centres, providing children with dedicated spaces to read, imagine, and explore. These books will improve the interactive reading activities such as storytelling sessions, role plays, story-sharing circles, and family reading events. Trained mentors will facilitate these sessions, ensuring that reading becomes a joyful, collaborative, and meaningful experience for every child.

Your support will help nurture creativity, and a lifelong love for reading—empowering rural children to dream beyond textbooks and shape a future filled with possibilities.
