Who we are

I am Sumeetha, a former IT professional turned nature educator and Teach for Nature fellow aiming to establish a library in Hilal School, Bengaluru. Hilal School is a linguistic and religious minority institution that serves children from Grade 1 to Grade 10 in both Urdu-medium and private English-medium sections. The school has nearly 650 students, most of whom come from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including backward and most-backward communities. Many are first-generation learners, striving to create opportunities that their families have never had before.

Our work and its impact

I have been conducting free weekly sessions at the school, bringing nature into classrooms through stories, activities, and observations. These sessions go beyond environmental awareness, nurturing curiosity, empathy, and emotional well-being—qualities that are vital for children growing up with social and economic challenges.

This nature-connect programme is offered with the aim of giving every child an opportunity to experience and connect with nature, something Bhoomi strongly believes is essential for holistic growth. Since Hilal School has very limited green spaces, I bring nature into classrooms through stories, interactive activities, and simple observations.

These sessions do more than just spark environmental awareness. They create safe spaces for calm, curiosity, and empathy; qualities especially important for children growing up with social and economic challenges. Over time, such experiences support emotional well-being and nurture responsible, compassionate individuals who can contribute positively to society.

How we will utilise these books

The funds raised will be used to procured storybooks from Pratham Books that will create small classroom libraries dedicated to nature and joyful reading. During my sessions, I will read aloud to the children, while also encouraging them to explore the books during their free time. This will give them the chance to discover stories on their own, fostering a love for reading that extends beyond textbooks. For many of these students, books will serve as windows into both the natural world and the world of imagination - igniting curiosity, creativity, and a sense of wonder. Over time, these classroom libraries will grow into valuable resources that enrich learning, strengthen emotional resilience, and inspire children to build deeper connections with themselves, their communities, and the environment.
