Know more about us
Who we are
Our organisation, Ujhala, is dedicated to shaping and nurturing empowered, compassionate, and sustainable communities in order to provide equal opportunities for a better life.
In our endeavour to address the complex and interconnected social issues prevailing in society, particularly in areas like Kotra, we have identified a crucial aspect that demands attention.
Kotra, situated 125 km away from Udaipur, is a tribal block with 95% of its population belonging to tribal communities such as Garasiya and Bheel. The literacy rate in Kotra, as per the 2011 census, is a mere 20.06%, significantly lower than the national average of 64%.
Our work and its impact
Our efforts have been directed towards addressing the challenges faced by the community, with a specific focus on education. Through initiatives like Night Community Learning Centers, we have successfully engaged 369 children, including Naina (name changed), a 12-year-old girl who was previously out of school due to family responsibilities.
We conducted an education survey in Sulav panchayat, uncovering 418 dropouts and out-of-school children. By establishing Night Community Learning Centers, we worked on fostering compassion, curiosity, and creativity, alongside foundational literacy and numeracy skills. This comprehensive approach has enabled 239 children to seamlessly transition into government schools, significantly improving their chances of completing their education.
How we will utilise these books
To enhance the comprehension skills of these children and others in school, we recognize the need for storybooks that the children will be able to comfortably read and understand. The phrase "भनवू मो हारा हिके गिया हों, भणवार वास्त सोपरी साइजे" in the Dhavadi language, spoken by the children we work with, translates to "we all have learned to read, we want story books for reading."
The funds raised through this crowdfunding initiative will be dedicated to providing children with storybooks from Pratham Books, as they are tailored to enhance reading skills. These books will be a part of a library-in-a-classroom, with nine such libraries planned to be set up in seven government schools and two learning centres. This initiative aims to impact more than 900+ children, creating an enriching environment for learning and fostering a love for reading.
Join us in empowering these children and contributing to a brighter future for Kotra. Your support will make a lasting impact on their educational journey. Together, let's write a new chapter in their lives through the magic of storytelling.
