Who we are
Primary School, Tilauli is a government primary school in the village of Tilauli, Uttar Pradesh. The students come from families of agricultural labourers. We established a mini community library for the students and out of 7000 books, 1500 books and comics are made by the students themselves by collecting various stories, facts and information from the newspapers. The main feature of our library is that it is a library which is open for our current and former students and the villagers as well. With the help of this library we walked an extra mile by educating 195 women from three villages, eight of whom have completed their senior secondary education.
Our work and its impact
Since its inception, the school has faced the problem of low student attendance. Out of 69 enrolled children, only 24 children used to attend the school, and their educational level was also very low. We created various types of active and functional committees such as Child Parliament MTA, PTA, Village Education Committee, School Management Committee etc, and their efforts and contribution made the school a model school not only in the block but also in the district. We changed the teaching methodology to make the school a centre of activity, in which we introduced art and craft, games, music, dance and library sessions etc. We organised summer reading camps to encourage dropouts to come back to school, and as a result 12 children rejoined the school and are now studying in graduation classes.
How we will utilise these books
Daan Utsav, the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated from October 2nd to 8th, during which people from all walks of life come together to give back to society. Our Daan Utsav campaign is raising funds for our mini community library. The funds will be used to good high-quality and age-appropriate storybooks from Pratham Books which will be read by children and the adults alike.
These books will be very helpful for our kids who are developing their reading and writing skills by writing poems based on the stories read during the library session.
