Who we are
The Bastar District Administration is committed to promoting the development and well-being of the rural and tribal communities in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. Our mission focuses on implementing government policies and programs aimed at sustainable development, education, health, and social welfare. In this formerly conflict-impacted region, where nature's beauty meets the resilience of its people, countless children long for the joy of reading. This initiative is being anchored by Public Policy in Action (PPiA) Fellows, one of whom is from Bastar, reflecting our commitment to nurturing local leadership and community engagement.
Bastar is home to 1,526 primary schools, and enhancing access to age-appropriate reading materials is crucial for supporting children's educational progress. Our efforts align with national objectives like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasise equitable access to quality education. By partnering with local communities, NGOs, and educational institutions, we aim to improve access to essential services—especially in education, a key driver of empowerment and social upliftment.
Our work and its impact
Our campaign seeks to transform lives through the power of books, fostering a culture of literacy under the mantra "learning to read; reading to learn." By partnering with Pratham Books, we aim to distribute 100,000 books and establish 10 classroom libraries, providing multilingual and culturally relevant education specifically tailored to indigenous and tribal children in Bastar.
This initiative aligns with the NIPUN Bharat Mission’s goal of ensuring foundational literacy and numeracy for all children by 2026. By equipping young learners with essential skills, we aim to foster language acquisition, broaden educational and employment opportunities, and empower children to actively participate in their communities and civic life.
By offering diverse books in multiple languages, we can help them connect with their heritage while developing essential reading skills. Many rural and tribal children still find the dream of exploring new worlds through books unreachable. Your support can bridge this gap, allowing these children to read independently and cultivate creativity and critical thinking.
Join us in this mission—your contribution can transform lives, one book at a time.
How we will utilise these books
The funds raised through this campaign will be used to procure books from Pratham Books and distributed across primary schools in Bastar, enriching classroom resources and fostering a love for reading among students. These materials will serve as valuable tools for both students and teachers, supporting literacy development, promoting critical thinking, and cultivating lifelong learning habits. Additionally, the books will be incorporated into community reading programs and local libraries, ensuring that children from all backgrounds have access to quality educational resources.
Given the increasing participation of thousands of women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs), we will empower SHG members to lead reading sessions, involving families in their children's learning journeys. We also plan to collaborate with Panchayati Raj Institutions through Baal Sabhas at Gram Panchayats to extend the reach of these reading programs and strengthen local governance structures.
This initiative will impact approximately 150,000 children, helping them develop the skills needed to navigate their futures with confidence. Beyond the classroom, we aim to foster a culture of learning that unites communities and encourages shared growth and collaboration across Bastar.
