Who we are
Janta Soochna Kendra, in collaboration with Jungle Jameen Jan Andolan and the Asangathit Mazdoor Union, works to secure land and forest rights for the Adivasi community and support the daily struggles of rural workers, particularly women. We operate an information facilitation centre where workers and the local community can access essential information about various laws and government schemes. Additionally, through our mobile e-mitra service, we provide online access to schemes for union members. Our team of dedicated local volunteers has also established community libraries in four villages to productively engage children and cultivate a love for reading.
Our work and its impact
We partner with local communities and workers' organisations, empowering them to lead efforts that address critical issues affecting their lives. Our library initiative, designed and implemented with community involvement, is a vital part of this support.
Our library educators, who come from the same communities as the children, are literate but lack formal training in child engagement or early education. With the help of committed resource persons, we provide them with ongoing support and capacity-building opportunities. Together, they create engaging language and reading activities for the children. Notably, school dropouts and children who have never attended school are showing growing interest in these reading spaces. We hope that reading will empower both these children and those currently attending school, instilling confidence and a lifelong eagerness to learn.
The books, filled with vibrant illustrations and diverse, joyful stories, offer children a small yet meaningful window to the world, quite different from online platforms like YouTube and Instagram.
How we will utilise these books
Our library educators will conduct regular read-aloud sessions and encourage children to read together, fostering collaborative learning. The books will also be used to inspire storytelling and artwork, helping children express themselves creatively. While the books are primarily for children aged 3 to 15, most have reading fluency well below their grade levels.
As the educators gain more confidence, we plan to collaborate with local schools, extending our reading sessions to benefit a broader community. The books will be rotated across our libraries and shared with interested teachers in neighbouring schools.
By supporting this campaign, you’re helping us provide Pratham Books to empower community libraries that inspire a new generation of readers among Adivasi children in Rajasthan.
