Who we are

This project seeks fun reading material for children who have just discovered the world of print. Agragamee works in 19 tribal schools with children from classes I to V. A major focus is to help children read with ease. This is a huge challenge with the first generation tribal children, who also have a different language. Agragamee has achieved this through innovative teacher training programs and a unique pedagogy that develops reading and writing skills through a combination of play and learning. This model is being taken up in 18 Government Schools in 3 tribal districts

Our work and its impact

Agragamee School began in 2005. It followed the state syllabus, and traditional patterns of teaching. Soon this proved to be inadequate, and we sought different means to make class more fun and enjoyable. Teachers came up with suggestions, and methods and innovations that helped us gradually develop a workable pedagogy through a combination of TLM, teacher training and creative methods. Now children and teachers in the early grades enter into a dynamic interacting process, that has been termed the Creative Language Development Efforts, and helps children and teachers enjoy school immensely!

How we will utilise these books

Agragamee which means, “pioneer”, is a group of activists and thinkers committed to working with marginalized and underprivileged communities in the tribal districts of Orissa, in India. Our mission is to promote all aspects of tribal development throughout India, through an integrated approach to help tribal communities mobilize for self-sustaining development initiatives. We are committed to work towards total human development and social justice through information, awareness and formation of local level organization. Our efforts at initiating a people-centred and ecologically sensitive development combine an issue-based approach with programmes for socio-economic development that have built up local leadership and empowered people through food and voice. Agragamee’s focus on education has helped children and adults enter into the world of knowledge and learning to take the first steps towards informed decisions for their own development and wellbeing. Agragamee’s successful models are recognized all over the country and have been taken up for replication by national as well as international agencies The funds will be utilized to provide libraries in 20 schools, which will enable children to go beyond textbooks, and increase their knowledge and awareness of the larger world.
