Who we are

Gramothhan is an Odisha-based non-profit organisation dedicated to providing quality education in marginalised communities and public primary schools located in vulnerable geographical areas. We are focused on the Sonepur district, one of the most underdeveloped regions in Odisha.

Our Vision: To ensure quality education for all rural and tribal children, fostering an empowered society.

Our Mission: We aim to empower children by providing holistic education through innovative, contextual, and scalable solutions while transforming government schools into model schools in rural and tribal areas of Odisha. It also includes transforming existing government schools into model schools with the support of the community and school staff, developing contextual academic resources for children to improve learning outcomes, creating a pool of local education leaders to sustain these model schools, and establishing learning spaces for children through active community involvement.

Currently, we operate two community libraries in Subarnapur and Mayurbhanj, along with several school libraries. Gramothhan not only provides books to children but also focuses on enhancing reading skills and fostering creative thinking.

Our work and its impact

Since 2017, Gramothhan has been working to improve education in the Sonepur district of Odisha. We focus on four key programs that impact children, parents, teachers, and the district administration:

Gramothhan Community Learning Centers: We operate six community centres in the Sonepur district through community support. These centres provide a strong educational foundation for children from rural and tribal communities.

School Transformation Program: Our goal is to create model schools that operate under the same conditions and resources as other government schools but deliver higher-quality education. This is made possible through the involvement of parents, the community, teachers, and government officials.

Library Program: Our community libraries provide rich reading resources for all, offering opportunities for children to engage in activities such as read-aloud sessions, storytelling, and artistic expression.

Youth Development: We support initiatives that empower youth through education and community involvement.

How we will utilise these books

The funds raised through this campaign will be used to establish libraries in five schools: Pratappur Government School, Janmura, Kumerkeli, Udepadar, and Sureswari Schools. These libraries will benefit approximately 170 children, primarily from rural and tribal areas in the Subarnapur district of Odisha. The children, coming from low-income communities with limited access to educational resources, will be engaged through activities such as book browsing, storytelling, read-aloud sessions, book talks, and self-directed reading. The books, provided by Pratham Books in both English and Odia, will ensure accessibility and relevance to the local context, fostering greater engagement. Through this initiative, we aim to create an inclusive environment where these children can improve their reading skills, explore stories, engage in discussions, and develop a lifelong love for learning.
