Who we are
Children from marginalized communities in underserved areas of Rajasthan have little access to books or libraries. With your support, Educate Girls will provide books to 100 government schools of Sirohi district and attempt to motivate 10,000 children in these schools to read and learn better.
Our work and its impact
Founded in 2007, Educate Girls (EG) is a non-governmental organization that holistically tackles issues at the root of gender inequality in India’s educational system. With a focus on enrollment, retention and learning, EG aims to provide quality education for all under-served and marginalized girls by leveraging public, private, and community resources. EG currently implements its programs in over 8,500 schools in 4,500 villages across 6 critical gender-gap districts in Rajasthan via its 580 personnel and 4,500 Team Balika (community volunteers). In the last seven years, EG has enrolled over 80,000 girls and over 390,000 children have demonstrated improved learning outcomes.
How we will utilise these books
Rajasthan has over 3,50,000 out-of-school girls, a high student dropout rate and one of the lowest female literacy rates. In rural Rajasthan, only 46.7 % of government school children in Standard V can read a Standard II text. EG works in rural, remote and under-served areas of Rajasthan where the girls’ drop-out rate is particularly high and the quality of education low. EG identifies out-of-school girls, enrols them, retains them in schools, trains teachers and community volunteers in activity-based pedagogy and equips them with Creative and Learning Teaching kits. Beneficiary story: Kavita was compelled to drop out of school and take care of her family 3 years ago because of her father’s failing health. Through the efforts of EG field team, Kavita's parents finally consented to sending their daughters to school. Kavita was put in Class 4 and her sisters into Class 1 and 3. We aim to provide 10 books each to 100 schools in remote villages of Sirohi district. Our Team Balika (community volunteers) will promote the books during their visits to the schools. These books will complement our activity-based pedagogy and help inculcate reading habits and comprehension amongst children. We’re hoping that 10,000 children will discover the joy of reading and thereby improve their learning outcomes.
