Who we are
The student leaders of Nanakmatta Public School in Uttarakhand have initiated a Community Library Programme. The programme is based in and around the region of Nanakmatta which is a small town located in the hilly state of Uttarakhand on the foothills of the Himalayas. This initiative was started during the COVID lockdown which later turned into a campaign impacting around 22 villages and is the first of its kind in this region.
Our work and its impact
The programme aims to make learning holistic and joyful for children through various events, sessions, workshops, library leaders meetings, storytelling sessions and community outreach programmes. The 'Community Library Leaders' manage these centres by themselves. These libraries are not just a tool to bridge educational inaccessibility during lockdown but also a centre for various activities like reading books, science & book fairs, village exploration, storytelling, and many other activities. These community libraries not only help the kids in accessing education, develop the skills of creativity and critical thinking but also helps the Community Library Leaders to learn and practice skills like leadership, communication, compassion, teamwork & creativity. The movement almost came to a halt when the schools were reopened and children went back to their daily routine. But the student leaders re-started this campaign and presently 10 community libraries are functional in different villages in Nanakmatta and a few more leaders have joined us in this initiative.
How we will utilise these books
Daan Utsav or, the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated every year in India from October 2nd to 8th and is India’s biggest festival of giving during which people from all over the country join hands to perform acts of kindness. The funds received through this Campaign will be utilised in the current active Community Libraries and the library in our school which will impact around 1000 students. Apart from Community Libraries, we are also trying to build a reading culture in our school. Our school's library is the nodal centre or source of books for these Community Libraries. We will establish more such community centres in our village. The books will help us impact more children through our campaign. It will provide more choices, exposure and help kids explore the joy of reading.
