Know more about us
Who we are
We are a group of 220 students from grades 1-8 studying in a Government school in Koinpur-Odisha and are in love with learning. We love sharing our stories with each other at School and back home with our families in our village. We are in need of storybooks for our new library, most importantly in a language and context we are able to understand.
Our work and its impact
I am a SBI Youth For India Fellow working on education in a rural part of Odisha. In my efforts I have been working with the Project Upper Primary School, situated in the village of Koipur housing 220 children from grades 1-8. A non-residential school currently under the SSA 2005, this school has been established in the year 1857 under the British rule. The school now accommodates 90% Tribal Children from the Lanjia Saora Tribal Community. The School's management comprises of the Head master and one Asst. Teacher.
How we will utilise these books
Our mission is to build the reading capabilities of our children and aid language development by encouraging children to become storytellers and independent learners through providing an access of a variety of books. We have been able to maintain a high interest level in our bi-weekly reading program and weekly workshop. The children whom we work with do not have access to storybooks. Most who come to school are first generation learners, with rich and varied backgrounds and experiences, however their families cannot read, write and do basic arithmetic and therefore not "functionally literate". Access to education is a great time for these children and their families to be able to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. This library will serve its communities children and its student population of 220 students. The funds will be utilized to buy books in 4 languages i.e Odiya, Hindi, English and Saora(Tribal Language). A small portion of these funds will be utilized to create our own material.
