Who we are
We are a government primary school in a village in Udupi district, Karnataka. 102 students from underprivileged backgrounds are enrolled in the school. Due to a lack of funds, our library is mostly filled with academic books and literary novels. We want to get children’s storybooks for students in grades 1 to 4 to help them improve their reading and writing skills.
Our work and its impact
Let’s Grow is a volunteer-led initiative to encourage children to spend more time outdoors and learn essential life skills like gardening, waste management, and identifying different types of plants and animals, etc. Our mission is to introduce them to native practices and a hands-on approach to learning. Through these activities, we want the children to bond with nature and spend less time with mobile phones and other gadgets.
How we will utilise these books
The school timetable includes a library hour during which a teacher holds read aloud sessions to pique their interest in reading. With the funds raised from this campaign, we will get multilingual storybooks from Pratham Books and give the children storybooks about nature, science, engineering, life skills, culture, etc, and help them adapt the lessons they learn from the stories to their daily lives. Through the magic of storybooks in many Indian languages, we hope to introduce them to the joy of reading and motivate them to develop a regular reading habit.
