Who we areHayden Hall Institute, a grassroots organisation established in 1969, works in the areas of health, nutrition, education, vocational guidance, livelihood, and entrepreneurship across Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri districts in West Bengal. Our work impacts 3000+ vulnerable families every year. We operate through a large network of community development workers, teachers, and artisans, as well as community-based organisations and government agencies. Our work is guided by a deep commitment to the transformation of the self and community through love and service.
Our work and its impactWith help from local teachers, we support the education of students enrolled in government schools or low-income private schools in 48 after-school study centres. We ensure that students complete their education until Class 12, and provide scholarships and linkages to Vocational Guidance courses. Our community development workers work with teachers, the students’ families and community-based organisations to ensure that families are healthy and students receive support from their homes. We have already established five libraries and are training our teachers to use the libraries efficiently.
How we will utilise these booksThe multilingual storybooks received from the campaign will be kept in libraries at every after-school centre. We hope to enhance the students’ English literacy and communication skills by encouraging them to read. We have included a Reading Programme - teachers will read to students, students will read to each other and engage in discussions. The teachers will conduct presentations and writing/art-based activities like theme-based book reports. The students will have access to the library to read whichever book they want, and at any time they wish.
