Who we areOur engagement with Kallukuttai - a squatter settlement situated in a marshland in Chennai, first began during the Covid-19 lockdown in May 2020, while mobilising support for communities affected by the pandemic. The idea of building a learning community emerged during this period, taking the form of evening classes for children, conducted on Gajalakshmi, a community and team member’s terrace. Over the past eight months, the community has slowly evolved to include a library, a tailoring centre for women and computer training classes. We operate out of a modest space consisting of two rooms and a terrace. We are a small team of three members, supported solely by contributions from friends and families.
Kallukuttai Learning Community is an initiative where participants - children, youth, parents, and teachers - are engaged in the practice of learning, questioning, critical thinking and are responsible for creating a learning community together.
