Our story

We are trying to generate books for students who are studying in 5 Government school in Thane. We require books for our classroom library for we wish to read more books and in our preferred language and at our reading level. Help these students become readers for life.

Who we are

My name is Nagender and I am doing the Gandhi fellowship (batch 2016-18). I work with municipal corporation schools in Thane. I am a motivated person, driven to accomplish set goals. To create an impact it is not necessary to change the whole world but if at all I can manage to change one life, it is enough. A school is an interactive space where learning happens not just in class but in every space where a child interacts. I do my interventions in 5 TMC schools out of which one is a Gujarati school, one is an Urdu school, Two Marathi schools and one English school.

Our work and its impact

Fellows join the Fellowship with a drive to cause change and are in a ‘raring to go’ state of mind. But social change is a complex process and needs deeper sincere engagement before impact can be made. Fellows need to unlearn patterns of behavior and thinking, retrain their minds, bodies and personalities to see things differently. Fellows need to learn to understand and respond to the world in reality and not just virtually. It has the following Key Components : Whole School Immersion, A first-hand experience of the challenges of being a teacher of a Government School and develop an original perspective on government school system. Fellows will visit school and observe and understand how it functions and will form a relationship with the key stakeholders of the school. The Fellow is given the role of a teacher and has to teach for several hours each day in a school Community Immersion, During this phase each Fellow will be assigned a community for 4-6 weeks. Fellow will have to find a family or families who will offer food or shelter. Fellows will need to find their own way to survive in the community.

How we will utilize these funds

I aim to establish a library in 5 Thane Municipal Corporation Schools. The funds will be utilized to buy the books in Hindi , English ,Gujarati and Urdu language. With the help of books I will start story telling sessions in the beginning so that kids can develop interest in reading and after one month I will give the responsibility of library to the Bal Sansad and teachers to make it self sustainable.
